Introduction to Cultural Humility
As a health professional, you may feel challenged to support culturally and linguistically diverse clients.
Clients bring their expectations, experiences, beliefs, communication styles, and attitudes to all health care encounters. Health professionals also bring their own assumptions, previous experience with clients of a particular culture or group, as well as their knowledge of health issues and the health care system to patient encounters.
How can health professionals enhance their capacity to effectively support clients and their health? As it is impossible to learn everything that is important about all cultures, populations or groups, one approach is to adopt a stance of cultural humility.
